Reading Bogue Sound begins with one plain fact: the water rises and falls on a rhythm, and that rhythm decides where you can go, where fish feed, and where the bottom comes up to meet a hull. Boaters, anglers and swimmers on the sound all work from the same set of numbers, and the numbers come from tide and current predictions rather than from guesswork. What a tide actually is
A tide is the rise and fall of the water level at a place. It is not a wave and it is not weather, though weather can pile water up or push it away. The tutorial sets out the mechanics in a sequence: what tides are, what causes them, how gravity, inertia and bulges interact, how changing angles change the picture, and how often tides come. The point for anyone on the sound is that the water level is a moving number, and the chart is a forecast of that number at fixed moments.
That forecast is why a dock that looks generous at one hour looks stingy six hours later. The same hull that floats free midmorning may sit on the bottom by mid afternoon if it was tied where the water drains hardest. The National Ocean Service frame is blunt about this: a crew inspecting a hull after a vessel stranded on a sandbar following a rapidly receding tide is the ordinary consequence, not an exotic one.

Why the sound is not the open ocean
Bogue Sound sits behind Bogue Banks, so the water that fills it has to come through an inlet and then spread sideways across a broad, shallow basin. That geometry changes how you read the chart. Out on the open ocean the tide arrives as a clean pulse. Inside the sound, the pulse is filtered, delayed and reshaped by the distance it travels across the flats.
The practical result is that the water level at one end of the sound and the level at the other do not move together, and the current in a channel can keep running after the water level has stopped rising. On the sound, wind is usually that something else.

Currents: the part that catches people out
A tide chart gives you a height. A current prediction gives you a direction and a speed. The two are related but they are not the same reading, and confusing them is where boats and swimmers get into trouble. Water moving through a narrow inlet, a dredged channel or the gap under a causeway can be running hard while the tide gauge nearby shows almost no change in height.
That is the reason the water moves fastest at the halfway points of a tide, when the level is changing most quickly, and goes slack near high and low water. An angler who watches the water knows this. How do you turn a prediction into a plan?
You read the numbers before you leave the dock, and you read them for the place you are actually going, not for the nearest big station. Then you compare what the water is doing with what the forecast said it would do. For a boat, the plan usually starts with depth. If your draft is three feet and the chart says a flat carries two feet at low water, that flat is a high water passage only. You cross it on the rising water and you are back on the deep side before the fall. For a swimmer, the plan starts with the same numbers for a different reason: a falling tide on a sound side beach can move water off the flats and out through the inlet, and the shallows and sound beaches note on tide range across the shallow flats at shallows and sound beaches is the place to line that up against where you intend to wade.

What moves fastest under the causeway
The crossing between Morehead City and Atlantic Beach is the pinch point most people meet first. All the water on one side of the sound has to pass through a limited opening, and a limited opening means speed. The section on water moving through the causeway channel at currents under the bridge treats that water on its own terms, because the causeway channel behaves more like a river than like the open sound.
The lesson carries to every inlet and every dredged cut. Narrow water runs fast. Fast water pushes a small boat off its line; it also scours and shifts sand, so a channel that was clean last season may not be clean this one. A chart plotter shows the channel as surveyed, not as it is today.

Does the tide always arrive when the chart says?
No, and the National Ocean Service is straightforward that predictions describe the astronomical tide, the part driven by the moon and sun. Wind, atmospheric pressure and freshwater running off the land sit on top of that and can add or subtract height and shift timing. On Bogue Sound, a sustained wind out of one direction for a day can hold water in or push it out, and the tide can effectively arrive early or late.
That is why experienced hands treat the chart as the baseline and the water as the truth. If the predicted low is not there when you look, the wind is telling you something, and the plan should bend to it. Reading the sound as one system
Tide, current, depth and wind are four readings of one body of water. A tide chart alone will not tell you whether the flat is passable; a current prediction alone will not tell you whether the inlet is safe to run. Read together, they describe a sound that is always draining or always filling somewhere, and your job is to know which way it is going where you are. The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries handles the stewardship side of these same waters, with jurisdiction over all coastal waters extending to three miles offshore, and its size and bag limits and proclamations are set with the same moving water in mind.
Start with the height, check the direction, watch the wind, and let the water correct the chart. The next time you stand on the causeway or idle at the mouth of an inlet, the numbers on your screen will read as a picture rather than a table, and the sound will stop surprising you in ways that cost a prop or a morning.
